The Treatment
Participants will receive up to 12 treatment sessions using evidence-based methods known to be effective for alcohol problems. The three treatments are called Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavior Therapy and Mindfulness Based Treatment. Treatments are provided remotely via Zoom.
- Motivational Interviewing (MI) is designed to enhance motivation to change by providing support and focusing on your values, goals and good intentions. Everyone in the study receives this treatment.
- Participants will be randomly assigned (like a flip of a coin) to then receive either:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on cognitive and behavioral coping skills training and emphasizes problem solving as an overall approach for changing your drinking.
- Mindfulness Based Therapy (MBT), which is designed to increase your awareness of triggers and decrease reactivity to distress or discomfort in the presence of triggers.
